On 14th March 2025, KEPSA Foundation Executive Director, Ms. Gloria Ndekei, participated in a beekeeping project launched by the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife and Lenana School Wildlife Club. The event also culminated in a tree planting initiative where a total of 1000 fruit and exotic trees were planted. The event was officiated by the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, State Department for Wildlife Principal Secretary, Hon. Silvia Museiya. Lenana School was led by its Principal, Mr. William Kemei. Other distinguished guests present included; Dagoretti South Constituency Member of Parliament, Hon. John Kiarie; Wildlife Conservation Secretary, Dr. John Chumo; P.C. Kinyanjui Technical Training Institute Chief Principal, Ms. Lucy Anampiu; and Wildlife Club of Kenya Conservation Programmes Manager, Dr. George Njagi.
Ms Ndekei in her remarks informed the guests of a long-term relationship between the Foundation and Lenana school. She underscored KEPSA Foundation’s commitment to climate conservation practices and expressed gratitude to the Principal of Lenana School for nurturing the avocado trees planted by KEPSA Foundation in 2018 as part of the Kijani initiative. She also congratulated the school for successfully establishing a functional tree nursery through Chandaria Foundation tree nurseries project. Additionally, Ms. Ndekei pledged to provide 4 beehives and concurred with the partner’s commitment to continue collaborating in order to develop more valuable aspects of the beekeeping value chain.
Lenana School Principal, Mr. Kemei highlighted that the school has established partnership with different stakeholders including the government through various ministries, KEPSA Foundation, and the Wildlife Clubs of Kenya in undertaking conservation initiatives. He also shared that the school that the school targets to plant more fruit trees in 2025. Additionally, he highlighted the school’s Environment Club through the beekeeping project was targeting to install 100 beehives by end of the first school term. This project would provide the students with hands-on learning opportunities and further generate income for the school.
Principal Secretary Hon. Museiya commended Lenana School for its dedication to environmental conservation, particularly its efforts in addressing climate change through tree planting initiatives. To further support these efforts, PS Museiya donated a 10,000-litre water tank and pledged to provide 500,000 tree seedlings, 15 beehives, and sponsorship for an inclusive trip for students who demonstrate a strong commitment to conservation.
The area Member of Parliament, Hon. John Kiarie, acknowledged the detrimental effects of past environmental neglect, including droughts and floods, and emphasised the critical importance of environmental conservation. He commended Lenana School for its efforts in combating climate change and encouraged the students to become champions of environmental conservation. Hon. Kiarie also committed to ongoing collaboration with the school on various initiatives, including partnering with PC Kinyanjui Technical Training Institute and the Lenana School Environment Club to address the technical needs of the school’s programs. Additionally, he proposed expanding the tree nursery at the school to increase the production of seedlings for distribution to neighbouring schools and the local community. Hon. Kiarie further pledged 5 beehives to the Environment Club.
Dr. George Njagi, Wildlife Club of Kenya Conservation Programmes Manager, emphasised the significance of pollinator conservation and committed to continued collaboration with the school on the beehive project.
Dr. John Chumo, the Wildlife Conservation Secretary, also expressed his gratitude for the ongoing partnership with the school, highlighting the consistent tree-planting efforts over the past five years that have led to the growth of a thriving forest. He extended his thanks to all the organisations involved for their dedication to environmental stewardship.
